George Orwell's 1984 is classic dystopian literature, but it is also psychologically astute and prescient concerning the totalitarian tendencies of the 20th century's ideologies. With the rise of 21st century Wokism currently in vogue, its message is a clarion call for the present, too. Let us beware of embracing rather than opposing the lies that are being forced upon us, lest we find ourselves, too, living in a world in which we must guard our very thoughts, lest they betray us. Book Three continues to discuss the educational system of 'guardians' of the hypothetical city we are constructing, the "good city" (in Greek kalipolis). We continue to discuss the official censorship required to be sure that our guardians are educated in the proper way. Once this is concluded, we discuss which of the guardians should rule, and how they are to be chosen from the other guardians, and finally that the guardians are to live a communistic existence without private property, wealth, or even living space. COMMON SENSE by Thomas Paine, Part 1

Leading up to the American Revolution, Thomas Paine's Common Sense made persuasive arguments for American Independence from Great Britain and for republican government. It is one of the most effective political tracts in history. First published in Philadelphia in January of 1776, it took the country by storm, turning the tide of opinion in the colonies. It also made Thomas Paine a central figure in the colonies, catapulting him to fame. He followed Common Sense with The American Crisis, a series of 13 essays written in the years following the Declaration of Independence (1776-1783). Enjoy!

"THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."
Thus begins one of the most well-known and loved treatises of the American Revolution. Written in 1776 after the great difficulties of the initial engagements with the enemy, General Washington thought so much of this first installment of what would become a book of 13 essays, that he had it read to the troops at Valley Forge. Rudyard Kipling’s ”The Gods of the Copybook Headings”

In this poem, Kipling points to the dangers of social engineering, of ignoring traditional morality in favor of "social progress." The arrogance of the human intellect, he warns, can lead to terrible destruction despite "good" intentions. It is the "gods of the copybook headings," representing the simple truths of traditional morality that guard and warn humanity most effectively. This seems a message tailor-made for today. Enjoy!

Lincoln’s Second Inaugural, and ”Fragment on the Constitution and Union”

Sometimes referred to as "America's Sermon," President Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural speech - delivered March 4th, 1865 - is one of the best known presidential addresses in American history. It should be in EVERY American's memory.
"A word fitly spoken by you now would be like 'apples of gold in pictures of silver.'" Alexander H. Stephens, a former Georgia congressman, wrote these words to Abraham Lincoln on December 30, 1860. He quoted from Proverbs 25:11 to persuade Lincoln that a public statement from the president-elect would help greatly in the mounting crisis of the divided country. A student of the Bible in his own right, Lincoln reflected on Stephens's biblical reference and, in a note to himself, used the "apples of gold" reference to clarify the connection between America's constitutional union and the principle of "Liberty to all."

Longfellow’s ”The Day is Done” and ”Psalm of Life”

I love these poems by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
"The Day is Done" speaks to me of that melancholy that floods my soul at the end of day, seeking solace in the simple, not the grandiose.
"Psalm of Life" stands in stark contrast, which is why I paired them. It speaks of our highest responsibilities and aspirations, the uncompromising striving towards a transcendent ideal in service of our fellow-man.

President Ronald Reagan ”Tear down this wall,” Part2

On June 12, 1987 President Ronald Reagan delivered this famous speech in West Berlin in front of the "Iron Curtain" separating Eastern and Western Europe in the Cold War. "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" is one of the most famous lines in any presidential address, appearing about halfway through the remarks. The Berlin wall fell in 1989, after Reagan left office. The speech is filled with classic Reagan and with historic references that those who lived those years will remember and appreciate, and those who didn't should know about.
