John Locke's Second Treatise of Government was thought by Thomas Jefferson one of the most important influences on his own political thinking, and one of the most important philosophical voices in the formation of the United States and its founding documents.

On October 31st, 1517, thirty-three-year-old priest and professor of theology, Martin Luther, nailed his academic disputes against the papal practice of indulgences onto the door of the Castle Church in Wittenburg. The theses were originally written in Latin, the academic language of the day. Luther was excommunicated by pope Leo X in 1520, and declared an outlaw of the Holy Roman Empire by Charles V in 1521. This event has often been seen as the spark that set the Protestant Reformation ablaze, yet few today are familiar with the content of the 95 Theses. They are presented here in three installments to familiarize a new generation with these world-shaking propositions.

Eve awakes from her Satan-whispered nightmare deeply troubled and anxious, telling Adam the foreshadow of her part in the Fall, and the words of the false angel of light. The fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, Satan tells her,
"Forbidden here, it seems, as only fit/For Gods, yet able to make Gods of Men/ ... Here, happy creature, fair angelic Eve,/Partake thou also; happy though thou art,/Happier thou mayest be .../Taste this, and be henceforth among the Gods/Thyself a Goddess, not to earth confined."
Thus always the proud appeal of self-aggrandizing knowledge to the rational soul, imagining for itself a utopia that denies the revealed boundaries of nature.
God sends the archangel Raphael to warn Adam of his danger. Adam and Eve entertain and feed their heavenly guest, and engage him in conversation to better understand the ways of heaven. Raphael relates the disobedience and war of the rebellious angels, telling of Satan's argument that it is not just that free souls be subject to authority, that they be bound by the will of another, and that they, too, are by rights gods - the same appeal he will use to corrupt Eve.
Satan is opposed by the angel Abdiel, calling out his rebellion and ingratitude, reaffirming the sovereignty of God, and pleading for repentance while mercy may be given. He is mocked for his allegiance, and Satan prefigures Nietzsche, Karl Marx, and the modern Hegelians, denying his Creator,
"We know no time when we were not as now;/Know none before us, self-begot, self-raised/By our own quickening power ... /Our puissance is our own; our own right hand/Shall teach us highest deeds, by proof to try/Who is our equal."
Book five closes as Abdiel flees the Apostate horde to take Satan's message and plans back to God's throne.

C S Lewis said: "ANIMAL FARM is formally almost perfect; light, strong, balanced. There is not a sentence that does not contribute to the whole. The myth says all the author wants it to say and (equally important) it doesn't say anything else."
Lewis did not like 1984: "Tragedy demands a certain minimum stature in the victim; and the hero and heroine of 1984 do not reach that minimum.... In Animal Farm all this is changed. The greed and cunning of the pigs is tragic ... because we are made to care about all the honest, well-meaning, or even heroic beasts whom they exploit. The death of Boxer the horse moves us more than all the more elaborate cruelties of the other book. And not only moves, but convinces."
"One result is that the satire becomes more effective. Wit and humour (absent from the longer work) are employed with devastating effect. The great sentence 'All animals are equal but some are more equal than others' bites deeper than the whole of 1984. Thus the shorter book does all that the longer does. But it also does more. Paradoxically, when Orwell turns all his characters into animals he makes them more fully human."
Wokist totalitarianism is blossoming and colonizing every segment of our culture. Boxer and Winston will again suffer and die, unless we "wake up" from the Wokist dystopian dream.

The great Athenian statesman, Pericles, offered this speech, one of the most famous in history, at the end of the first year of the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC). It is probable that Socrates was present at the speech, and Plato would be born within two years following it. It was the Golden Age of Greece, and Pericles was in no small way responsible for that.

Book four of Paradise Lost is STUNNING in its profundity and psychological insight, not to mention the sheer beauty of Milton's poetic imagination. For any familiar with C. S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, the literary influence is crystal clear, as Satan approaches the walled garden, the paradiso, of Eden, and climbs the wall, disdaining the gate, as does Jadis in The Magician's Nephew. We should pay particular attention to Milton's psychological portrait of Satan, the deliberate choice of evil, the acknowledgment of good and the desire to spoil it, the regret and pain in knowing himself a parasite on all the goodness and blessedness of creation, the arrogance and pain in knowing himself a diminished being as he confronts those "lesser" angels who are now his betters, as he chose his own will over that of his Creator. As Lewis says in The Great Divorce, "there are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, ... 'thy will be done.' All that are in hell choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no hell." Satan here acknowledges this when he says, "Evil, be now my good," and that in fleeing hell, he carried it with him, and all its attendant misery, as he is himself hell incarnate, the choice to exalt self over God.

Lewis did not like 1984: "Tragedy demands a certain minimum stature in the victim; and the hero and heroine of 1984 do not reach that minimum.... In Animal Farm all this is changed. The greed and cunning of the pigs is tragic ... because we are made to care about all the honest, well-meaning, or even heroic beasts whom they exploit. The death of Boxer the horse moves us more than all the more elaborate cruelties of the other book. And not only moves, but convinces."

When the Constitution of the US was ratified on June 21st, 1788, the anti-Federalists, led by Patrick Henry, voiced loud and determined opposition to it, demanding a "Bill of Rights" to restrict the reach of the new Federal government, and the threat of monarchy in the Presidency. The centralization of power in the national government threatened both state sovereignty and individual rights, they argued. In the process of ratifying the Constitution several states made it clear that their approval rested upon the passage of a "Bill of Rights" to correct the deficiencies and over-reach they feared. James Madison wrote a series of 12 Amendments, 10 of which were ratified together to form what we today call the Bill of Rights on December 15, 1791. The Amendment process has proceeded through history, and we presently have 27, all of which are presented here.

Book four of Paradise Lost is STUNNING in its profundity and psychological insight, not to mention the sheer beauty of Milton's poetic imagination. For any familiar with C. S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, the literary influence is crystal clear, as Satan approaches the walled garden, the paradiso, of Eden, and climbs the wall, disdaining the gate, as does Jadis in The Magician's Nephew. We should pay particular attention to Milton's psychological portrait of Satan, the deliberate choice of evil, the acknowledgment of good and the desire to spoil it, the regret and pain in knowing himself a parasite on all the goodness and blessedness of creation, the arrogance and pain in knowing himself a diminished being as he confronts those "lesser" angels who are now his betters, as he chose his own will over that of his Creator. As Lewis says in The Great Divorce, "there are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, ... 'thy will be done.' All that are in hell choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no hell." Satan here acknowledges this when he says, "Evil, be now my good," and that in fleeing hell, he carried it with him, and all its attendant misery, as he is himself hell incarnate, the choice to exalt self over God.

Book three of PARADISE LOST begins with the poet offering a paean to the 'celestial light,' his muse, and while lamenting his temporal blindness, he asks the light to shine inward so "that I may see and tell/Of things invisible to mortal sight."
His vision then turns to heaven and discussion between Father and Son and the plan of redemption freely undertaken by the eternal Word, and the angelic choir sings the glory of the Eternal Godhead's justice and mercy.
The vision then shifts again to Satan, who arriving on earth seeks for Eden.

Churchill was no longer Prime Minister when he delivered this famous speech at Westminster College in Fulton Missouri on March 5th, 1946. Having been invited by the college's president, encouraged by President Truman with a promise to introduce him if he came, the newly deposed Prime Minister, as 'leader of the opposition' in Britain aptly defined the world stage for the next half-century:
"From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe.... all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere, and all are subject ... not only to Soviet influence but to a very high ... measure of control from Moscow.... [T}his is certainly not the Liberated Europe we fought to build up. Nor is it one which contains the essentials of permanent peace."
Hope lay in the Western democracies and the "special relationship" between Britain and the United States.
His warnings were even more prophetic than he himself knew:
"However, in a great number of countries, far from the Russian frontiers and throughout the world, Communist fifth columns are established and work in complete unity and absolute obedience to the directions they receive from the Communist center. Except in the British Commonwealth and in the United States where Communism is in its infancy, the Communist parties or fifth columns constitute a growing challenge and peril to Christian civilization. These are somber facts for anyone to have to recite on the morrow of a victory gained by so much splendid comradeship in arms and in the cause of freedom and democracy; but we should be most unwise not to face them squarely while time remains."

C S Lewis said: "ANIMAL FARM is formally almost perfect; light, strong, balanced. There is not a sentence that does not contribute to the whole. The myth says all the author wants it to say and (equally important) it doesn't say anything else."
Lewis did not like 1984: "Tragedy demands a certain minimum stature in the victim; and the hero and heroine of 1984 do not reach that minimum.... In Animal Farm all this is changed. The greed and cunning of the pigs is tragic ... because we are made to care about all the honest, well-meaning, or even heroic beasts whom they exploit. The death of Boxer the horse moves us more than all the more elaborate cruelties of the other book. And not only moves, but convinces."
"One result is that the satire becomes more effective. Wit and humour (absent from the longer work) are employed with devastating effect. The great sentence 'All animals are equal but some are more equal than others' bites deeper than the whole of 1984. Thus the shorter book does all that the longer does. But it also does more. Paradoxically, when Orwell turns all his characters into animals he makes them more fully human."

George Orwell's 1984 is classic dystopian literature, but it is also psychologically astute and prescient concerning the totalitarian tendencies of the 20th century's ideologies. With the rise of 21st century Wokism currently in vogue, its message is a clarion call for the present, too. Let us beware of embracing rather than opposing the lies that are being forced upon us, lest we find ourselves, too, living in a world in which we must guard our very thoughts, lest they betray us. C S Lewis said: "ANIMAL FARM is formally almost perfect; light, strong, balanced. There is not a sentence that does not contribute to the whole. The myth says all the author wants it to say and (equally important) it doesn't say anything else."
Lewis did not like 1984: "Tragedy demands a certain minimum stature in the victim; and the hero and heroine of 1984 do not reach that minimum.... In Animal Farm all this is changed. The greed and cunning of the pigs is tragic ... because we are made to care about all the honest, well-meaning, or even heroic beasts whom they exploit. The death of Boxer the horse moves us more than all the more elaborate cruelties of the other book. And not only moves, but convinces."
"One result is that the satire becomes more effective. Wit and humour (absent from the longer work) are employed with devastating effect. The great sentence 'All animals are equal but some are more equal than others' bites deeper than the whole of 1984. Thus the shorter book does all that the longer does. But it also does more. Paradoxically, when Orwell turns all his characters into animals he makes them more fully human."
Wokist totalitarianism is blossoming and colonizing every segment of our culture. Boxer and Winston will again suffer and die, unless we "wake up" from the Wokist dystopian dream.
