THE FEDERALIST PAPERS #78, ”The Judiciary Department,” by Alexander Hamilton

Federalist papers #'s 10, 39, 51, 68, and 78 are considered the five most important, so we give them pride of place in publication here on Simple Gifts. The remainder will follow in numerical order.
Authored by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay to appear anonymously in New York papers under the pseudonym "Publius" in 1787 and 1788, the Federalist Papers aimed to rally public support for the proposed Constitution of the United States. As such, it is one of the most important sources for understanding the original intent of the US Constitution by those who participated in its construction.
In Federalist number one Alexander Hamilton sets forth the ambition of arguing the following positions in favor of the adoption of the Constitution:
"I propose, in a series of papers, to discuss the following interesting particulars:
THE UTILITY OF THE UNION TO YOUR POLITICAL PROSPERITY
THE INSUFFICIENCY OF THE PRESENT CONFEDERATION TO PRESERVE THAT UNION
THE NECESSITY OF A GOVERNMENT AT LEAST EQUALLY ENERGETIC WITH THE ONE PROPOSED, TO THE ATTAINMENT OF THIS OBJECT
THE CONFORMITY OF THE PROPOSED CONSTITUTION TO THE TRUE PRINCIPLES OF REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT
ITS ANALOGY TO YOUR OWN STATE CONSTITUTION and lastly,

The angel Raphael's account of heavenly matters at an end, Adam seeks to retain his heavenly visitor by recounting his memory of the events in Eden, and the curiosity of the angel, too, is aroused to seek knowledge of God:
Nor less think we in Heaven of thee on Earth/Than of our fellow-servant, and inquire/Gladly into the ways of God with Man:/For God, we see, hath honored thee, and set/On man his equal love: Say therefore on... for I attend,/Pleased with thy words no less than thou with mine.
Adam's story of God's immediate presence to him in the first theophany, sets the stage:
Presence Divine. Rejoicing, but with awe,/In adoration at his feet I fell/Submiss: He reared me, and 'Whom thou soughtest I am,'/Said mildly, 'Author of all this thou seest/Above, or round about thee, or beneath.'
We prefigure here the name of God, the Great "I am" of Moses, the eternal Word.
'This Paradise I give thee, count it thine/To till and keep, and of the fruit to eat:/Of every tree that in the garden grows/Eat freely with glad heart;/fear here no dearth:/But of the tree whose operation brings/Knowledge of good and ill, which I have set/The pledge of thy obedience and thy faith.
After naming the animals, Adam expresses to God desire for his own complement.
Of fellowship I speak/Such as I seek, fit to participate/All rational delight: wherein the brute/Cannot be human consort: They rejoice/Each with their kind, lion with lioness;/So fitly them in pairs thou hast combined.
The Maker's reply is beautiful, and fit:
I, ere thou spakest,/Knew it not good for man to be alone;/... What next I bring shall please thee, be assured,/Thy likeness, thy fit help, thy other self,/Thy wish exactly to thy heart's desire.
Adam awakes to Eve:
Grace was in all her steps, Heaven in her eye,/In every gesture dignity and love.
His words of praise to God for this sweetest of all divine gifts:
Thy words, Creator bounteous and benign,/Giver of all things fair, but fairest this/Of all thy gifts .... I now see/Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh, myself/Before me: Woman is her name; of man/Extracted: for this cause he shall forego/Father and mother, and to his wife adhere;/And they shall be one flesh, one heart, one soul.
Adam is so smitten, that he finds himself nearly undone in Eve's presence, an experience since familiar to all men in love, both sublime and dangerous: 
when I approach/Her loveliness, so absolute she seems/And in herself complete, so well to know/Her own, that what she wills to do or say,Seems wisest, virtuousest, discreetest, best:/All higher knowledge in her presence falls/Degraded; Wisdom in discourse with her/Loses discountenanced, and like Folly shows;/Authority and Reason on her wait ... /and, to consummate all,/Greatness of mind and Nobleness their seat/Build in her loveliest, and create an awe/About her, as a guard angelic placed.
Warned by Raphael to not allow love to overwhelm reason, Adam replies that it is not just Eve's beauty that draws his love, but:
those graceful acts,/Those thousand decencies, that daily flow/From all her words and actions mixed with love/And sweet compliance, which declare unfeigned/Union of mind, or in us both one soul;/Harmony to behold in wedded pair/More grateful than harmonious sound to the ear..../To love, thou blamest me not; for Love, thou sayest,/Leads up to Heaven, is both the way and guide
As the apostle John will later say, God is love. It is God who ordained the completion of man in woman, two as one.
The story complete Raphael returns to heaven with these words of parting from Adam:
Go, heavenly guest, ethereal Messenger,/Sent from whose sovereign goodness I adore./Gentle to me and affable hath been/Thy condescension, and shall be honored ever/With grateful memory: Thou to mankind/Be good and friendly still, and oft return.

PILGRIM’S PROGRESS by John Bunyan, Part 6

C. S. Lewis said this in MERE CHRISTIANITY, "anyone who is honestly trying to be a Christian will soon find his intelligence being sharpened: one of the reasons why it needs no special education to be a Christian is that Christianity is an education itself. That is why an uneducated believer like Bunyan was able to write a book that has astonished the whole world."
By all counts PILGRIM'S PROGRESS is one of the most influential and well-read books in all history. Lewis himself did it homage as a new Christian when he penned his own PILGRIM'S REGRESS soon after his conversion from theism to Christianity.

The angel Raphael, completing his narration of the war in heaven and the fall of Satan and his host, is asked by Adam for more information.
Whence Adam soon repealed/The doubts that in his heart arose: and now/Led on, yet sinless, with desire to know ... /What within Eden, or without, was done/Before his memory; as one whose drought/Yet scarce allayed still eyes the current stream,/Whose liquid murmur heard new thirst excites.
Doubt, curiosity and rational exploration are then encouraged and met by divine Providence/revelation, while at the same time Raphael warns that improper desire for knowledge can lead to foolishness. 
to recount almighty works/What words or tongue of Seraph can suffice,/Or heart of man suffice to comprehend?/Yet what thou canst attain ... shall not be withheld/Thy hearing; such commission from above/I have received, to answer thy desire/Of knowledge within bounds; beyond, abstain/To ask; nor let thine own inventions hope/Things not revealed, which the invisible King ... Only Omniscient, hath suppressed in night;/To none communicable in Earth or Heaven:/Enough is left besides to search and know./But knowledge is as food, and needs no less/Her temperance over appetite, to know/In measure what the mind may well contain,/Oppresses else with surfeit, and soon turns/Wisdom to folly.
Raphael recounts the Creation story to Adam and Eve, filled to overflowing with the brilliant speculations of Milton in connection to the biblical narrative, he ends by again encouraging human curiosity and investigation:
And thy request think now fulfilled, that asked/How first this world and face of things began,/And what before thy memory was done/From the beginning; that posterity,/Informed by thee, might know: If else thou seekest/Aught, not surpassing human measure, say.

Authored by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay to appear anonymously in New York papers under the pseudonym "Publius" in 1787 and 1788, the Federalist Papers aimed to rally public support for the proposed Constitution of the United States. The angel Raphael, completing his narration of the war in heaven and the fall of Satan and his host, is asked by Adam for more information
Whence Adam soon repealed/The doubts that in his heart arose: and now/Led on, yet sinless, with desire to know ... /What within Eden, or without, was done/Before his memory; as one whose drought/Yet scarce allayed still eyes the current stream,/Whose liquid murmur heard new thirst excites.
Doubt, curiosity and rational exploration are then encouraged and met by divine Providence/revelation, while at the same time Raphael warns that improper desire for knowledge can lead to foolishness. 
to recount almighty works/What words or tongue of Seraph can suffice,/Or heart of man suffice to comprehend?/Yet what thou canst attain ... shall not be withheld/Thy hearing; such commission from above/I have received, to answer thy desire/Of knowledge within bounds; beyond, abstain/To ask; nor let thine own inventions hope/Things not revealed, which the invisible King ... Only Omniscient, hath suppressed in night;/To none communicable in Earth or Heaven:/Enough is left besides to search and know./But knowledge is as food, and needs no less/Her temperance over appetite, to know/In measure what the mind may well contain,/Oppresses else with surfeit, and soon turns/Wisdom to folly.
Raphael recounts the Creation story to Adam and Eve, filled to overflowing with the brilliant speculations of Milton in connection to the biblical narrative, he ends by again encouraging human curiosity and investigation:
And thy request think now fulfilled, that asked/How first this world and face of things began,/And what before thy memory was done/From the beginning; that posterity,/Informed by thee, might know: If else thou seekest/Aught, not surpassing human measure, say.

Lines 680 - 912
The angel Raphael continues his account to Adam of the conflict in heaven. Abdiel returns to find heaven in preparation for the war he came to warn was coming. God praises his faithfulness. Satan experiences pain for the first time as he is severely wounded in his battle with Michael. The first day is a victory for the ranks of heaven, as the rebel angels understand pain for the first time, retreating to nurse their wounds. Satan and his angels devise the infernal invention of cannon and gunpowder during the night, seeming to turn the tide in the morning's engagement. As heaven itself becomes more chaotic God calls an end to the battle, sending His Son to conquer and cast the rebels into the Pit. Driven by fear the demons and their leader throw themselves the Abyss. Raphael warns Adam from this example:
Satan ... who envies now thy state,/Who now is plotting how he may seduce/Thee also from obedience, that, with him/Bereaved of happiness, thou mayest partake/His punishment, eternal misery ..../But listen not to his temptations, warn/Thy weaker; let it profit thee to have heard,/By terrible example, the reward/Of disobedience; firm they might have stood,/Yet fell; remember, and fear to transgress.

C. S. Lewis said this in MERE CHRISTIANITY, "anyone who is honestly trying to be a Christian will soon find his intelligence being sharpened: one of the reasons why it needs no special education to be a Christian is that Christianity is an education itself. That is why an uneducated believer like Bunyan was able to write a book that has astonished the whole world."
By all counts PARADISE LOST is one of the most influential and well-read books in all history. Lewis himself did it homage as a new Christian when he penned his own PILGRIM'S REGRESS soon after his conversion from theism to Christianity.

The angel Raphael continues his account to Adam of the conflict in heaven. Abdiel returns to find heaven in preparation for the war he came to warn was coming. God praises his faithfulness. Satan experiences pain for the first time as he is severely wounded in his battle with Michael. The first day is a victory for the ranks of heaven, as the rebel angels understand pain for the first time, retreating to nurse their wounds. Satan and his angels devise the infernal invention of cannon and gunpowder during the night, seeming to turn the tide in the morning's engagement. As heaven itself becomes more chaotic God calls an end to the battle, sending His Son to conquer and cast the rebels into the Pit. Driven by fear the demons and their leader throw themselves the Abyss. Raphael warns Adam from this example:
Satan ... who envies now thy state,/Who now is plotting how he may seduce/Thee also from obedience, that, with him/Bereaved of happiness, thou mayest partake/His punishment, eternal misery ..../But listen not to his temptations, warn/Thy weaker; let it profit thee to have heard,/By terrible example, the reward/Of disobedience; firm they might have stood,/Yet fell; remember, and fear to transgress.

"The first Thanksgiving Day celebrated under the new Constitution took place on November 26, 1789, the first year of George Washington’s presidency. President Washington issued this proclamation recognizing November 26 as “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer.” John Adams and James Madison also issued proclamations calling on Americans to observe certain days with fasting, prayer, and thanksgiving, but after Madison no President of the United States issued a proclamation for Thanksgiving until Abraham Lincoln.   On October 3, 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, President Lincoln made the traditional Thanksgiving celebration a nationwide holiday. Since this proclamation, each of his successors as president has issued a Thanksgiving proclamation every year, appointing the day first specifically set by Lincoln—the “last Thursday in November.”   In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday to the third Thursday of November to lengthen the Christmas shopping season.  After a storm of protest, Congress established the Federal Thanksgiving Day holiday following the passage of a joint resolution, H.J. Res. 41, by the House of Representatives on October 6, 1941, declaring the "last Thursday in November a legal holiday." The Senate then passed an amendment "making the fourth Thursday in November a legal holiday."

George Orwell’s ANIMAL FARM, Chapter 10, Part 2 CONCLUSION

C S Lewis said: "ANIMAL FARM is formally almost perfect; light, strong, balanced. There is not a sentence that does not contribute to the whole. The myth says all the author wants it to say and (equally important) it doesn't say anything else."
Lewis did not like 1984: "Tragedy demands a certain minimum stature in the victim; and the hero and heroine of 1984 do not reach that minimum.... In Animal Farm all this is changed. The greed and cunning of the pigs is tragic ... because we are made to care about all the honest, well-meaning, or even heroic beasts whom they exploit. The death of Boxer the horse moves us more than all the more elaborate cruelties of the other book. And not only moves, but convinces."
"One result is that the satire becomes more effective. Wit and humour (absent from the longer work) are employed with devastating effect. The great sentence 'All animals are equal but some are more equal than others' bites deeper than the whole of 1984. Thus the shorter book does all that the longer does. But it also does more. Eve awakes from her Satan-whispered nightmare deeply troubled and anxious, telling Adam the foreshadow of her part in the Fall, and the words of the false angel of light. The fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, Satan tells her,
"Forbidden here, it seems, as only fit/For Gods, yet able to make Gods of Men/ ... Here, happy creature, fair angelic Eve,/Partake thou also; happy though thou art,/Happier thou mayest be .../Taste this, and be henceforth among the Gods/Thyself a Goddess, not to earth confined."
Thus always the proud appeal of self-aggrandizing knowledge to the rational soul, imagining for itself a utopia that denies the revealed boundaries of nature.
God sends the archangel Raphael to warn Adam of his danger. Adam and Eve entertain and feed their heavenly guest and engage him in conversation to better understand the ways of heaven. Raphael relates the disobedience and war of the rebellious angels, telling of Satan's argument that it is not just that free souls be subject to authority, that they be bound by the will of another, and that they, too, are by rights gods - the same appeal he will use to corrupt Eve.
Satan is opposed by the angel Abdiel, calling out his rebellion and ingratitude, reaffirming the sovereignty of God, and pleading for repentance while mercy may be given. He is mocked for his allegiance, and Satan prefigures Nietzsche, Karl Marx, and the modern Hegelians, denying his Creator,
"We know no time when we were not as now;/Know none before us, self-begot, self-raised/By our own quickening power ... /Our puissance is our own; our own right hand/Shall teach us highest deeds, by proof to try/Who is our equal."
Book five closes as Abdiel flees the Apostate horde to take Satan's message and plans back to God's throne.

C S Lewis said: "ANIMAL FARM is formally almost perfect; light, strong, balanced. There is not a sentence that does not contribute to the whole. The myth says all the author wants it to say and (equally important) it doesn't say anything else."
Lewis did not like 1984: "Tragedy demands a certain minimum stature in the victim; and the hero and heroine of 1984 do not reach that minimum.... In Animal Farm all this is changed. The greed and cunning of the pigs is tragic ... because we are made to care about all the honest, well-meaning, or even heroic beasts whom they exploit. The death of Boxer the horse moves us more than all the more elaborate cruelties of the other book. And not only moves, but convinces."
"One result is that the satire becomes more effective. Wit and humour (absent from the longer work) are employed with devastating effect. The great sentence 'All animals are equal but some are more equal than others' bites deeper than the whole of 1984. Thus the shorter book does all that the longer does. But it also does more. Paradoxically, when Orwell turns all his characters into animals he makes them more fully human."
Wokist totalitarianism is blossoming and colonizing every segment of our culture. Boxer and Winston will again suffer and die, unless we "wake up" from the Wokist dystopian dream.

Martin Luther’s 95 Theses (Oct 31, 1517), Part 3

On October 31st, 1517, thirty-three-year-old priest and professor of theology, Martin Luther, nailed his academic disputes against the papal practice of indulgences onto the door of the Castle Church in Wittenburg. The theses were originally written in Latin, the academic language of the day. Luther was excommunicated by pope Leo X in 1520, and declared an outlaw of the Holy Roman Empire by Charles V in 1521. This event has often been seen as the spark that set the Protestant Reformation ablaze, yet few today are familiar with the content of the 95 Theses. They are presented here in three installments to familiarize a new generation with these world-shaking propositions.
