C. S. Lewis said in MERE CHRISTIANITY, "anyone who is honestly trying to be a Christian will soon find his intelligence being sharpened: one of the reasons why it needs no special education to be a Christian is that Christianity is an education itself. That is why an uneducated believer like Bunyan was able to write a book that has astonished the whole world."
By all counts PILGRIM'S PROGRESS is one of the most influential and well-read books in all history. Lewis himself did it homage as a new Christian when he penned his own PILGRIM'S REGRESS soon after his conversion from theism to Christianity.

Plato’s PHAEDO, Part 3

Thursday May 04, 2023

Thursday May 04, 2023

Plato's Phaedo is one of his most read, and certainly one of the most dramatically interesting of his dialogues. It gives the account of Socrates' death-day, but contains a great deal of Plato's own philosophical musings. For the scholarly, this dialogue is from Plato's early middle period, in which we think he was using Socrates as the mouthpiece for his own philosophical theories, whereas in the earlier dialogues - for example, Euthyphro, Apology and perhaps Crito, Socrates was much closer to his actual practice as the "gadfly of Athens." Phaedo almost certainly was written before Republic, and in many ways prefigures it. One of my favorite passages from Phaedo is when the character Simmias says this to Socrates on the topic of life-after-death:
It seems to me, Socrates, and perhaps to you too, that definite knowledge of such matters is either impossible or extremely difficult in this life. That said, however, it is a very faint-hearted person who does not scrutinize the arguments about these matters in every manner possible, without giving up until totally exhausted by the enquiry. For we should proceed on these issues in one of two ways, either learn or discover how matters stand, or if this is impossible, then adopt the best and most unassailable argument of humankind, climb on board that, as if it were a raft in a perilous sea, and sail upon it through life, unless one can travel on a more secure vessel, some divine word, safely and free from danger.
This passage speaks to me of faith in a way consonant with Socrates's views (and, perhaps to a lesser extent, with Plato's), and has played an important role in my own thinking about the nature of faith in human life.
There are innumerable other valuable insights to gain here, not least the noble death to which Socrates committed himself, and the manner in which his death prefigured that of the Lord Jesus.
Enjoy!

Authored by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay to appear anonymously in New York papers under the pseudonym "Publius" in 1787 and 1788, the Federalist Papers aimed to rally public support for the proposed Constitution of the United States. As such, it is one of the most important sources for understanding the original intent of the US Constitution by those who participated in its construction.
In Federalist number one Alexander Hamilton sets forth the ambition of arguing the following positions in favor of the adoption of the Constitution:
"I propose, in a series of papers, to discuss the following interesting particulars:
THE UTILITY OF THE UNION TO YOUR POLITICAL PROSPERITY
THE INSUFFICIENCY OF THE PRESENT CONFEDERATION TO PRESERVE THAT UNION
THE NECESSITY OF A GOVERNMENT AT LEAST EQUALLY ENERGETIC WITH THE ONE PROPOSED, TO THE ATTAINMENT OF THIS OBJECT
THE CONFORMITY OF THE PROPOSED CONSTITUTION TO THE TRUE PRINCIPLES OF REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT
ITS ANALOGY TO YOUR OWN STATE CONSTITUTION and lastly,
THE ADDITIONAL SECURITY WHICH ITS ADOPTION WILL AFFORD TO THE PRESERVATION OF THAT SPECIES OF GOVERNMENT, TO LIBERTY, AND TO PROPERTY."
Articles and essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay under the collective pseudonym "Publius" to promote the ratification of the Constitution of the United States.

As book ten ended, Adam and Eve were bowing in worship and sincere repentance to God for their failures, so book eleven opens with heaven's response, God's grace in His Son, offering Himself as "advocate and propitiation," so that:
my merit those shall perfect ... till death, his doom ... to better life shall yield him; where with me all my redeemed may dwell in joy and bliss; made one with me, as I with thee am one.
Thus the breaking of relationship accomplished in sin and Fall is restored in the Son. But the Father declares that the Pair must leave Eden, for "longer in that Paradise to dwell the law I gave to Nature him forbids," and to keep man from eating of the tree of life which would serve, "but to eternize woe," for God's mercy "provided death" as a "final remedy" for a life of sin.
The Archangel Michael is chosen to carry out the mission of driving Adam and Eve from the Garden, and to "guard all passage to the tree of life."
Adam expresses to Eve his fundamental faith in God's goodness: "Eve, easily may faith admit, that all the good which we enjoy from Heaven descends. Acknowledging her part in the Fall, Eve pledges to Adam, "I never from thy side henceforth to stray, where'er our day's work lies, though now enjoined laborious ... here let us live, though in fallen state, content."
When the Pair hear of their expusion from Eden, Adam says this:
This most afflicts me, that, departing hence, as from his face I shall be hid, deprived of his blessed countenance: here I could frequent with worship place by place where he vouchsafed Presence Divine.... In yonder nether world where shall I seek His bright appearances, or foot-step trace?
The loss of the immediate presence of God to man is part of the great tragedy Milton sees in the fall. Michael's response is that God is to be found everywhere in Creation.
The remainder of Book eleven is a recounting of the history to come for Adam, ending with the great flood and the Noahic covenant - the rainbow in the sky.

Book 10 plays out the consequences of the Fall of Man. The Son of God appears in the Garden, charged by God to bring judgment, and calls:
Come forth. He came; and with him Eve, more loath, though first To offend; discountenanced both, and discomposed; Love was not in their looks, either to God, Or to each other; but apparent guilt, And shame, and perturbation, and despair, Anger, and obstinacy, and hate, and guile. Whence Adam, faltering long, thus answered brief. I heard thee in the garden, and of thy voice Afraid, being naked, hid myself.
ALL has changed. The greatest damage of all is the damage of relationship. Man now with God cannot have the free and easy discourse he was created to share with his Creator. Adam and Eve are at odds with one another, bickering and recriminating, no longer the models of loving husband and wife Milton has so carefully chiseled for us. Man, Woman and Serpent judged, the Son returns to heaven.
Adam laments:
Oh miserable of happy, Is this the end Of this new glorious world, and me so late The glory of that glory, who now become Accursed, of blessed? hide me from the face Of God, whom to behold was then my heighth Of happiness!
Echoing Satan's self-reflection in Book 3, Adam says:
Oh Conscience, into what abyss of fears And horrors hast thou driven me; out of which I find no way, from deep to deeper plunged!
While like Satan in sin, unlike him in pride and hopelessness, Book ten ends with Adam and Eve falling in worship before God, confessing their faults and acknowledging their responsibility:
So spake our father penitent, nor Eve Felt less remorse: they forthwith to the place Repairing where he judged them, prostrate fell Before him reverent; and there confessed Humbly their faults, and pardon begged; with tears Watering the ground, and with their sighs the air Frequenting, sent from hearts contrite, in sign Of sorrow unfeigned, and humiliation meek.

Plato’s APOLOGY, Part 6

Thursday Apr 13, 2023

Thursday Apr 13, 2023

The Apology is one of the most important texts in all of Western thought. Prior to the explicit dumbing down of Western education accomplished in the 20th century's Marxist educational revolution, knowledge of Socrates' trial and death was one of the anchors of Western cultural awareness. If we are to recover our culture we must return to our foundations, and Plato is the perfect place to start!
The Apology is Plato’s account of Socrates’ defense (which is what the Greek word apologeo means) before an Athenian jury of 501 citizens. It is ironic that the English transliteration of the Greek term carries connotations of saying “I’m sorry,” because this type of apology is nowhere to be found in Socrates’ speech. All trials of this type in Athens were required to be completed in a single day. The order of the trial was: 1) prosecution’s case, which we do not have, 2) defendant’s case (this is the point at which the Apology opens), 3) jury deliberation and verdict, 4) penalty phase, in which both the prosecution and the defense propose a penalty for those found guilty, 5) jury deliberation on penalty, and 6) closing words of the defendant.
As necessary background for the Apology, we must review some information on the paid itinerant teachers called Sophists. The most famous of these teachers was Protagoras, who famously claimed that “man is the measure of all things.” “Sophist” means ‘wise one,’ though by Plato and Socrates’ time it had morphed into a less-than-flattering appellation. As a result, our English term “sophistry” means clever but misleading reasoning. The reason for this reversal of meaning is that the Sophists were relativists, who taught rhetoric, the art of persuasive speech. If, as Protagoras maintained, all standards are human in origin, then there is no right and wrong. Much of Socrates’ speech in the Apology is meant to distance himself from the Sophists, with whom he was popularly associated.

Plato’s APOLOGY, Part 3

Thursday Mar 23, 2023

Thursday Mar 23, 2023

C. S. Lewis said this in MERE CHRISTIANITY, "anyone who is honestly trying to be a Christian will soon find his intelligence being sharpened: one of the reasons why it needs no special education to be a Christian is that Christianity is an education itself.

The famous "Euthyphro dilemma" is taken from this dialogue: 'is something good, or "pious" because it is loved by god, or is it loved by god because it is "pious," or good?'
The dialogue, however, has many other fascinating aspects. It serves well as an introduction to the famous account of Socrates' trial (399 B. C.) in The Apology, which is arguably one of the most famous and important philosophical texts in the Western canon. It is one of the finest examples of Socratic (in opposition to Platonic) dialogue, the question-and-answer format that leads the reader and the participants to a more detailed understanding of the topic under consideration, even though it never answers the question.
There are two characters in this drama: 1) the famous Athenian philosopher, Socrates, who is on his way to his own trial on charges of A) impiety towards the gods, and B) corrupting the youth of Athens; and 2) Euthyphro, a priest of the Greek god Apollo, who is bringing a lawsuit against his father for murdering a worker on the family farm who'd killed a servant.
As a priest, Euthyphro claims to be an expert on "piety," and Socrates asks to be instructed on the topic, seeing that charge A against him - essentially the charge of atheism, or believing there are no divine beings - might require a knowledge of "piety" in his own defense. As usual in a Socratic dialogue, Socrates displays the inability of the "expert" to fully understand even his own discipline.
Along the way, we learn the Greek method of definition by genus and difference laid out later by Aristotle, as well as other fascinating things. We hope you enjoy this "blast from the past" here on Simple Gifts!

PARADISE LOST
Book 8, Adam and Eve
Lines 437 - 653
The angel Raphael's account of heavenly matters at an end, Adam seeks to retain his heavenly visitor by recounting his memory of the events in Eden, and the curiosity of the angel, too, is aroused to seek knowledge of God:
Nor less think we in Heaven of thee on Earth/Than of our fellow-servant, and inquire/Gladly into the ways of God with Man:/For God, we see, hath honored thee, and set/On man his equal love: Say therefore on... for I attend,/Pleased with thy words no less than thou with mine.
Adam's story of God's immediate presence to him in the first theophany, sets the stage:
Presence Divine. Rejoicing, but with awe,/In adoration at his feet I fell/Submiss: He reared me, and 'Whom thou soughtest I am,'/Said mildly, 'Author of all this thou seest/Above, or round about thee, or beneath.'
We prefigure here the name of God, the Great "I am" of Moses, the eternal Word.
'This Paradise I give thee, count it thine/To till and keep, and of the fruit to eat:/Of every tree that in the garden grows/Eat freely with glad heart;/fear here no dearth:/But of the tree whose operation brings/Knowledge of good and ill, which I have set/The pledge of thy obedience and thy faith.
After naming the animals, Adam expresses to God desire for his own complement.
Of fellowship I speak/Such as I seek, fit to participate/All rational delight: wherein the brute/Cannot be human consort: They rejoice/Each with their kind, lion with lioness;/So fitly them in pairs thou hast combined.
The Maker's reply is beautiful, and fit:
I, ere thou spakest,/Knew it not good for man to be alone;/... What next I bring shall please thee, be assured,/Thy likeness, thy fit help, thy other self,/Thy wish exactly to thy heart's desire.
Adam awakes to Eve:
Grace was in all her steps, Heaven in her eye,/In every gesture dignity and love.
His words of praise to God for this sweetest of all divine gifts:
Thy words, Creator bounteous and benign,/Giver of all things fair, but fairest this/Of all thy gifts .... I now see/Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh, myself/Before me: Woman is her name; of man/Extracted: for this cause he shall forego/Father and mother, and to his wife adhere;/And they shall be one flesh, one heart, one soul.
Adam is so smitten, that he finds himself nearly undone in Eve's presence, an experience since familiar to all men in love, both sublime and dangerous:
when I approach/Her loveliness, so absolute she seems/And in herself complete, so well to know/Her own, that what she wills to do or say,Seems wisest, virtuousest, discreetest, best:/All higher knowledge in her presence falls/Degraded; Wisdom in discourse with her/Loses discountenanced, and like Folly shows;/Authority and Reason on her wait ... /and, to consummate all,/Greatness of mind and Nobleness their seat/Build in her loveliest, and create an awe/About her, as a guard angelic placed.
Warned by Raphael to not allow love to overwhelm reason, Adam replies that it is not just Eve's beauty that draws his love, but:
those graceful acts,/Those thousand decencies, that daily flow/From all her words and actions mixed with love/And sweet compliance, which declare unfeigned/Union of mind, or in us both one soul;/Harmony to behold in wedded pair/More grateful than harmonious sound to the ear..../To love, thou blamest me not; for Love, thou sayest,/Leads up to Heaven, is both the way and guide
As the apostle John will later say, God is love. It is God who ordained the completion of man in woman, two as one.
The story complete Raphael returns to heaven with these words of parting from Adam:
Go, heavenly guest, ethereal Messenger,/Sent from whose sovereign goodness I adore./Gentle to me and affable hath been/Thy condescension, and shall be honored ever/With grateful memory: Thou to mankind/Be good and friendly still, and oft return.

C. S. Lewis said this in MERE CHRISTIANITY, "anyone who is honestly trying to be a Christian will soon find his intelligence being sharpened: one of the reasons why it needs no special education to be a Christian is that Christianity is an education itself.

Conclusion of John Locke's SECOND TREATISE OF GOVERNMENT
Chapter 19, Sections 234 -243
John Locke's Second Treatise of Government was thought by Thomas Jefferson one of the most important influences on his own political thinking, and one of the most important philosophical voices in the formation of the United States and its founding documents.
As such, it is vital to Americans in these days to understand and know Locke's ideas. History is being rewritten at a level approaching the Doublethink of George Orwell, and we must know and proclaim the Truth, the ultimate safeguard of our liberties against the forces of tyranny.
